Hairstyles Shag 2013

Hairstyles Shag 2013

Hairstyles Shag 2013: Although a shag cut is different than a layered cut, it takes layers to actually achieve a shag. Amy Bush of Ambushed in Columbus, Ohio, explains that a layered haircut can vary between the extreme of a pixie cut, to almost one length with only a little weight taken off around the edges. Bush says layered cuts can be extremely blunt or very soft and textured with the weight of the hair distributed along the lower or top portion of the head. Contrary to layered haircuts, which can show many different shapes, shags will have a consistent profile. In a nutshell, shag cuts are always layered but not all layered cuts are shags.

Who Should Wear the Shag Hairstyle?

A shag is layered from the shortest piece from the crown all the way down the length, so there's no weighted areas within the haircut, giving you that free-flowing "shaggy" look, says NYC hairstylist Arturo of House of Arturo. He says the shag is great for people who have straighter hair with a bit of weight to it. The style is ideal for an edgy client since the shag represents a kind of rock star lifestyle -- think Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. If you can pull off the look, Arturo says there's a shag for everyone no matter the shape of your face. Some celebs that have sported the '80s classic include Sharon Stone, Meg Ryan and Lisa Rinna.

Styling the Shag

Since the shag is so no-fuss, Arturo says to apply a bit of Volumactive Mousse by Kerastase, then you can just kick back and let this low-maintenance look air dry naturally. Finish with Brialliantine by Bumble and bumble for a slept-in, come hither look.

Who Should Wear Layers?

Layers apply to many styles, including the shag. Monica Flatequal of Detours Salon in Encinitas, California, says the advanced techniques used in cutting layers encompass many different styles, lengths and angles that can be customized to your face shape and desired look. For example, Flatequal says someone with fine hair should do a little layering through the crown to create body, but avoid layering in the ends as this removes weight and can make the hair appear thinner. Have bold, shoulder-length ringlets? Ask your stylist for more layering to form a naturally round style.

Styling Layers

Hairstyles Shag 2013: Arturo says just as versatile layers are, so are the products you can use to style them. Talk with your stylist to determine the best styling product for your look within your budget. The most popular celeb to wear a few variations of layered cuts is -- you know who -- Jennifer Aniston, of course!
