Layered Shag Hairstyles 2013

Layered Shag Hairstyles 2013

Before you ask your stylist to give you a non-layered shag haircut, note that there is no such thing. The trick to rocking a non-layered look is in the styling. Doctor your 'do with the right tools and products to look longer and sleeker rather than choppy. To go the non-layered route, it's best if you have thin, straight hair or hair with only a small amount of wave. Other types of hair have minds of their own, springing upward and outward when you cut them, making them just right for layered shag styles.

Layered Shag Hairstyles 2013

For a flatter shag that hangs toward the face and looks less layered, use Jane Fonda's character Bree from the 1971 film "Klute" as your inspiration. This was the classic shag, somewhere between a bob haircut and the more feathery shags of today. The length is longer but still swings over the shoulders. Go with a single long layer cut around the jawline for a mod look. Keep the top looking smooth by working pomade through your roots and on any flyaway strands.

Tousled Shag

A layered shag often has a tousled look, drawing from the trend of bedhead hairstyles. This type of shag has more volume than the less-layered shag. If you have wavy or curly hair, add a short layer on top so you don't weigh down the hair underneath. If you have straight or fine hair, give it movement and volume by chopping the ends at slightly different lengths. For rock 'n' roll edge, use a razor rather than scissors to trim the hair framing your face. Run mousse through your roots while your hair is damp and set it in clips that pull your top hair upward to lift it at the roots and get more volume.

Super-Layered Shag

Today's shag of many layers looks a world apart from the flatter hairstyle that sparked the trend. Super-short layers are just the beginning for this look. Many women style it to point upward and outward, using mousse to lift the top and sides and gel to shape waves going in opposite directions. Asymmetrical layers, side-swept bangs or behind-the-ear styles make a layered shag hairstyle look glamorous and on-trend. Women with coarser hair may get frustrated with this cut, as it gets bulky and frizzes out quickly.

Layered Shag Hairstyles 2013: One place that doesn't need layers for a shag haircut is your bangs. Go with thick bangs in a blunt cut for a classic look that frames your face beautifully. Skip this style, however, if you have a shorter or wider face. For a layered shag style, bangs may be wispy, choppy or nonexistent. Use color to accent your shag haircut. Basic black channels the rock star shags of The Ramones and Patti Smith, while streaky highlights give your tousled shag modern-day glam.
